Sophie's Watermelon Tourmaline

Sophie asked me to make her a ring using this tourmaline stone she bought. I don't often work with client's stones but for this, I made an exception. Watermelon tourmaline is a naturally occurring colour change that happens when the crystal is growing and shades from pink to green. Hence the name. Paired with pale pink, dark green tourmaline and a deep ruby to highlight the different shades within the stone.

Sugar and Blood

Charles selected this included tourmaline heart for the centre of his engagement ring. The flaws inside the stone give it texture and intrigue, and also, make me think of a delicious raspberry flavour boiled sweet. The three diamonds in the piece were taken from Charles' Mother's ring to keep the family significance of the piece and the other stones were selected by colour to bring out the flashes within that tasty heart. The large stone on the left hand side is a pigeon blood ruby, it was the hardest shade to choose and also, probably the most expensive stone in the piece, not that that matters at all.

Tourmaline, Diamond, Ruby, Madeira citrine, Morganite

Diamond Afterthought Engagement Ring

To design Ronan's engagement ring he sent me a few photographs of his girlfriends ring collection and a list of her favourite colours. The centre stone is a square cushion cut tourmaline with a selection of clashing and complimentary stones growing up around her. I added one small diamond to the side as a tiny jewellery 'fuck you' to the traditional engagement ring.

Tourmaline / Ruby (both traditional hot pink and pigeon blood shades) / Madeira citrine / Sapphire / Emerald / Diamond

Winnie's Love Hearts and Teardrops

One of the most challenging pieces I've ever made, and also one of the ones I am most proud of. The secret of this incredible green tourmaline heart is the diamond and sapphire teardrops that hold her up. The points of the teardrops hold onto the stone acting like even more claws around her. Many of my pieces work as metaphors and this one is no different.

Andy and Laura's All Green Everything

Did you know our eyes can see more shades of green than any other colour? This huge, pale, Colombian emerald centre stone is full of natural inclusions which catch the light and create internal intrigue. The shoulder stones are also emeralds but in the classic deep green with a truer clarity showing both sides of this stone. Finished with pave green tourmaline details to complete the range of hues.

Jackie's Mother's Earrings

Jackie gave me her Mother's aquamarine earrings and a selection of her other jewels to make into a piece to remember her by. The deeply included pink tourmaline teardrop centre stone was Jackie's choice and the earrings and deep blue sapphires support her. I love the mix of colours and the contrast between opaque and clarity in this sentimental piece.

Suzanne's Apricot Tourmaline Heart

This piece for me, is not a ring, but a miniature sculpture. A juicy apricot heart is held within five gold claws, but the real magic lies in the asymmetric teardrops that support the stone. Set into each handmade rose gold bezel and holding either a pigeon blood, Burmese ruby or a green tourmaline, is a teardrop. Playing with the angles that we view and appreciate jewellery from, the stories they tell, and the significance a shape can hold, this piece, for me, pushes the boundaries of what jewellery is.
